The doors on this list have become so iconic that when you re-watch any of the movies you find yourself on the edge of your seat, just thinking ‘NOOOOO! Don’t do it!!!’ as the character approaches the handle...
8 The wardrobe doors in Monsters Inc.
The little children in the film can complain to their parents about monsters as much as they like without being believed. But little do their parents know, there is actually a whole host of monsters waiting behind their wardrobe doors just ready to spring out at them.
7 The hatch door in Lost
It’s been many years since Lost was on our TV screens, and as confusing and utterly bizarre as it was, the show will remain in the TV history books for its uniqueness. A major feature of the show was of course the presence of the mysterious hatch that castaway John Locke became obsessed with. Despite warnings from the island’s resident seer Walt, Locke went ahead and opened it anyway starting a chain of events that shook the island to its core.
6 The door to John Malkovich’s mind in Being John Malkovich
The whole premise of this door is just super creepy. Not only do you get to see through someone else’s eyes for a while, this ability to step into his head and live forever is just plain weird. We should’ve known from the start though with the tiny door being located on a oddly half-sized floor of an office building and it being hidden. We all know that that means ‘Don’t open me!’
5 The doors to the Wonka factory in Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory
Surely we’re not the first to notice that Willy Wonka is actually a very very dark movie. The ‘lucky’ kids are for the most part scarred for life and in some way damaged by the end. Who would’ve thought that opening the doors to the most revered place in town would result in such chaos!?
4 The door to Regan’s room in The Exorcist
Perhaps what’s most disturbing about this door is that we know exactly what’s behind it. Yet out of love and fear the possessed girl’s mother has to go through it time and time again. What’s more, the door actually has its own part to play, in this, one of the best horror films of all time. For example, the door splits open during Regan’s exorcism.
3 The door to ‘The Chokey’ in Matilda
Who could forget the chokey? It’s basically every kid’s worst nightmare, and is made even worse by the horrible beast of a woman that throws you in there. The claustrophobic space ,filled with rusty nails is something out of a horror film, not a family film!
2 The door to Room 101 in Nineteen Eighty-Four
The dystopian thriller is at many times uncomfortable to the viewer . Obviously the most frightening thing a person can encounter is their worst fear. So the fact that when this door is opened you’ll come face to face with something that terrifies you to the depths of your soul is horrendously creepy.
1 The elevator doors in The Shining
Stanley Kubrick’s frightening feature isn’t short of scary moments. What with those creepy, ghostly twins and of the course the iconic ‘Here’s Johnny!’ moment. But perhaps the most shocking scene in the whole of the film is the elevator scene. As one of the film’s many surreal moments, the gallons of blood pouring out of the red elevator doors does stick in your mind.
